Design

Volunteer story: David Yates

“VOXX offers contributors the chance to canvas their inventiveness to fit the theme or topic of their feature. Produced with each issue is a collaboration of artistic difference, ideas and now made itself recognisable and distinctive.

Now VOXX is bombarded with keen, expressive designers who are opting to concentrate on the importance of content layout rather than the content itself. Which is great, I believe, because innovative layout produces true, personal style - which is what VOXX is all about. I hope that some of my design has reflected this and really added to the feel of the magazine.”

David’s design work

Here at VOXX we use a software programme called Quark XPress to design our magazine and marketing materials. Quark is one of the main industry-standard programmes used by media companies and design houses all over the world.

VOXX offers free one-to-one training in Quark, as well as other software such as Adobe Photoshop. Combined with one on one training, the software is very user-friendly so volunteers have found they can produce very professional results after a few hours.

If you’re thinking of a career in design, media or journalism, then this is a great skill to get on your CV!
