One Piece Z
‘One piece Z’ is, in my opinion, the best One Piece movie ever made. What I love about it is the fact that usually an anime movie would be a one-off type of movie, but this didn’t do that. This was a full length film based on the One Piece anime.
The basic story is about ex-Navy admiral Black Arm Zeypher, (Now Calling himself Master Z), after he has rebelled against the Navy and created an organization, The Neo Marines, with the intention of replacing them and eliminating every pirate in the world at any cost. Following an unexpected counter on board his ship, protagonist Monkey D Luffy is forced to fight him.
What I love most about this film is how it tells a very personal story about the Straw-Hat Pirates, Luffy in particular. Also, unlike many other ‘One Piece’ villains, Z actually has a defined character arc as well, and you understand the motivation behind what he is doing. There are also tons of other characters that get some much-needed screen time, which really adds to the depth of the story and offered some welcome character development. Even the Straw-Hat Pirates get attention, which is great to see.
It’s as if the director of this movie didn’t think of it as a one-off, instead wanting to create something of value to the series as a whole, and honestly the result is excellent in every sense of the word. ‘One Piece Z’ may be a standalone movie, but the way it was written really made it feel like part of a full-length story, of which I loved every second.
