Lost Within – Tempus
Lost Within last week released their long awaited Tempus EP, on 26 October. We’ve given it a listen, and believe it’s going to be one of the biggest local releases of the year.
The EP opens with ‘Elegy’. Ticking clocks, haunting pianos, synths and choral echoes swell and engulf your ears as the piano builds into an epic, spiralling crescendo. It’s ‘hairs on the back of your neck sticking up’ territory.
Kicking straight into a heavy clunking riff, ‘Tempus’ mixes brutal guitars with guttural vocals before opening up into a delicately multi-vocal layered chorus, pulling the big operatic sounds with the band’s harder edge. The chorus reminds me partly of Pendulum and partly of In Flames, with its big sounds and soundscapey feel. It’s a strong lead single and sets the stage for what’s to come. Hats off to the solo work, which neatly wraps the whole thing together. Check out the video below:
Next is ‘History (My Gift)’. With a riff so thick and fat it could be off the next Killswitch album, the tone becomes more malevolent. The feel is more unforgiving. Pounding drums lead through as it turns more thrashy, the sound still big and bold, brutal and stomping. Doom filled and grating, the track happily takes its time. It’s a head banger’s dream.
More driving guitar takes centre stage in ‘I Won’t Leave’, laying down an intricate framework for the bass and vocals to happily dance over. Here we see a more experimental approach as the song enters its midsection. The choral vocals create an otherworldly feel before we are cast headlong back into the no-nonsense chug of the guitars, gravel vocals and throbbing bass. The song progresses into a heavy thrash, changing the pace before the final big surge of chorus. Impressive stuff!
‘One Last Game’ offers heavy, fast grinding guitar, thumping drums and rumbling bass. It’s in your face and destroying the place, no holds barred. Another big chorus, the skin flutters and the hairs stand again. Breakdown riffs, grind, rage and spit saturate until a slow, soft turn. Ghostly voices slow the pace before a truly HUGE solo dazzles the ears, building up the epic finale.
Finishing the record, ‘Not Worth My Time’ is a track that builds fast, opening to drums and guitar before descending into a thrashing onslaught of fire vocals, grooving riffs and driving basslines. It’s pure Lost Within and shows the band at their strongest. The Mid Breakdown kicks some serious ass with all the brooding angst I’ve come to expect from these guys, and as we end back where we started, the haunting piano churns the guts – fantastic.
Tempus displays a band defining their sound, perfecting their craft. Building on past success the sound is big and bold, a careful mix of all the elements that make Lost Within stand out, creating a perfect balance of brutal and beautiful. Head stomping riffs, cycling solos and gravel roar give way to huge choruses, delicate vocals and careful arrangements, to create a full diverse and divisive sound. This is a something special and is well worth your attention!
