Joel Dommett @ Grimsby Auditorium

“Pipe up! F**k off!”

I wouldn’t be surprised if the auditorium never has British comedian Joel Dommett back. The Skins and I’m A Celebrity star didn’t hesitate for a moment before ripping into the venue, comparing it to a sports hall with spare chairs from the village hall, or even more offensively a prison canteen. That’s not to say that it wasn’t hilarious, as was the majority of his entire performance last Friday (22/09).

The thing interesting thing about Joel is his ability to improvise on the spot. While there was a clear routine, he made a lot of jokes and commentary that was very specific to the venue, town and crowd, making it more relatable and showing off his cleverness and imagination. With comedy, live music and plenty of audience banter, the show had a bit of everything and told a wonderful story throughout about love, loss, friendship and everything in-between.

There was a confetti cannon, mood lighting, audience participation and a stellar rendition of ‘Last Resort’ by Papa Roach. And that was without listening to him singing about his “laser d*ck” while shooting a strobe light around the venue, or trying (and failing) to crowd surf. Are there better comedy writers out there? Probably. But if his aim was to make us laugh, he certainly delivered, as the room erupted into thunderous applause.

And that’s what you expect from a comedy show, right?

  • This Month’s Theme

The idea of talking about Christmas in September divides the nation, but we’re going to do it anyway, because the next issue is planned for release just in time for the holidays!

In the past we’ve focused on the commercial side, and on entertainment, but this year we’re thinking a little differently.

While we are still accepting content on any topic and still love to read all your reviews, we would like to put an emphasis on feelgood stories, things that can open our eyes or make us feel something, whether that’s advice on conquering a fear or goal, stories from real people in the community, celebrations and events, stories of experiences or foreign, far off places, or perhaps something as simple as a warming family recipe.

Good luck, and happy writing! Content deadline November 1st.
