Corpse Party

Originally available on NEX PC-9801 and developed and published by Mages, Team GrisGris, 5pb and Grindhouse for many different platforms, such as Microsoft Windows, PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS, this survival horror adventure game has gained a strongly growing following.

There are many characters and the spin-offs are connected to it, but the main characters we meet here are Satoshi Mochida, Naomi Nakashima and Yoshiki Kishinuma. After performing the Sachiko Ever After ritual to remain friends even after graduation, the group is forced to Heavenly Host Elementary School, surrounded by horror, traps and a killer walking the halls.

This is a visual novel type of game with life and death puzzles along the way, as you walk around discovering the mysteries of the school. Each character faces a different challenge on their journey, picking up items and solving puzzles while avoiding the school’s monsters.

The game is very disturbing and contains disturbing imagery, as well as dealing with topics such as death, suicide and depression in high school aged characters. With this in mind, this game is not for everyone. The art in the game has been made through PRG Maker, so it’s simple but effective, and the sound really adds to it.

This is a good game to play if you can get over the dark themes, as the story is well created and some of the characters are very likeable. The game is also easy to get a copy of as it appears on so many platforms, and it has good replay value so it can take many hours to clear. Different spin-offs also exist to tell the story through the eyes of some of the other characters, which are equally enjoyable.
