Behind Blue Eyes + Others @ O’Rileys
O’Rileys, Hull - 22/02/2018
Tonight LEVEL Promotion has put together another blinding line up of up-and-coming local and touring talent.
A gentle acoustic start to the evening courtesy of Max Cheesbrough, a mix of pop punk, folk guitar, poignant lyrics and a voice heavily resembling ex-co-lead frontman of Blink 182, Tom DeLonge – promising stuff.
Then comes the heavy, starting with Framework. Jangly, echoey guitars take centre stage as a backbone of the softer sounds which crescendo to heavy riffs and heavier breakdowns. Emotive vocals and simple but effective delivery hold true to the sincerity of the sound, which quickly dances from epic, big and bombastic to slow and delicate.
Next, Tempest explode into life. 110% pure energy, they don’t stop for a second, with big, big riffs – building peaks of heavy, unrelenting walls of guitars, pounding bass and heavy syncopated drums all add to the mix. The set is electric; the crowd rally around as guitar and bass join them. Unrelenting, the sound builds and builds until a thrashing, guitar strap snapping climax.
Finally, Behind Blue Eyes take to the stage, with guttural, dystopian sounds; deep rumbles and grumbles from a solid backline morphing almost liquid guitar work. The sound is dynamic to say the least, swiftly moving from big chorus to riffs thick like tar. The thing that made these guys stand out is that they actually looked like they were having the time of their lives from start to finish. No doom and gloom brooding, no skulking about or spin kicks – just well written songs, powerfully delivered with love and care. This is the way to do it!
Hopefully the first of many nights to come from LEVEL in 2018. Bring it on!
