Avengers Endgame

It’s here. The final installment in the Infinity saga has finally concluded after 11 years, in arguably one of the biggest moments in cinematic history. It took 22 films to tell this story, which I have been following since the age of eight, since the original Iron Man. But the question on everyone’s minds is despite the hype, did ‘Avengers Endgame’ conclude the Marvel Cinematic tale on a high note?

The story is hard to describe without revealing spoilers, as there is so much to discuss it’s unbelievable. But what I will say is that if you love these stories and films, this is a lover letter to you and your tastes. Every past film is referenced in some way, and the character interactions are fantastically emotional. Every character develops in some way, whether it’s Thor’s guilt over the events of ‘Inifinity War’ or the way Captain America tries to help people in smaller ways. These characters we’ve come to know and love have had the emotional journey of their lives, and yet the rollercoaster is only really beginning. The pacing can be a little off at times, and some the second act can drag on a little, which is unfortunate considering how much stuff is going on. I also feel the film spends just a little too long explaining certain rules, which would be fine if it took up less space.

Having said that, the movie is undoubtedly visually stunning. Every Marvel film is hot, and this is no exception. It’s dark and terrifying when it needs to be, yet bright and colourful in the right moments, offering a sense of hope and joy. I also really enjoy the locations featured, especially with the focus on call-backs and the impacts they have on the wider story. The action scenes themselves are fantastic as well, especially in the third act, which had me literally on the edge of my seat. Unfortunately the soundtrack is weak, but it still works with the story and is forgivable given that the third act makes every issue in the whole cinematic universe worth every second of suffering through.

Though ‘Avengers Endgame’ may not be the best paced movie, or the best written, I honestly don’t care. This tale has still left me speechless, a feat very few films have been able to accomplish. Stan Lee would be proud of this moment, and all I would like to say to him and everyone else involved on page and on screen, is thank you.
