Armed Forces Day Launches Countdown
Today marked 100 days until the National Armed Forces event on Cleethorpes seafront, which is set for Saturday 25 June 2016. A small crowd gathered to witness the event, which involved the raising of flags for each respective force and the passing of a military tornado to signify the countdown had begun.
A small group of children from St. James’ School were in attendance, as well as a number of military leaders and personnel.
We had the pleasure of speaking to Alex Baxter, the managing director of the armed forces events in North East Lincolnshire, and the armed forces champion of the borough. On the afternoon’s proceedings and the subsequent summer campaign, he said: “Today’s event marks the 100 day countdown to our big event, which will be hosted in Cleethorpes this year. It is set to be the biggest and best event for several years since Queen Victoria visited the town.”
Plenty of dignitaries and notable people are set to attend what promises to be an unforgettable day of celebration. The army, navy and air force will present, with visits from everyone from the youngest cadets to the oldest veterans. Full families who have served in the forces will even be in attendance together, which will certainly make the day even more special.
You can also expect to see an aviation display much like the one that showed along the seafront in 2015. As well as aircrafts, including the ever popular red arrows and Royal Navy Black Cats helicopters, naval ships and artillery tanks are set to make an appearance for spectators to explore. Parades of 1000s are expected for this enormous and honourable event, catered by a host of entertainment and stalls.
On the event itself, Baxter said: “It will be successful, and have commercial benefits too. We aim to bring pride back to both the area and to the armed forces as a whole. We have freedom because they exist, and it’s important that we never lose sight of that.”
